COMMENTS: I
cut this stone thinking it was a chrysoberyl, but it appears to have
too high of a refractive index and a very low specific gravity
(weight). The RI appears to be around 1.777 unless I'm not
getting a good reading and it is in excess of the 1.82 my refractometer
can measure up to. The stone also has a color shift from more
greenish in daylight to more orangy under incandescent, and, if that's
not enough, it is dichroic and shows green around the edges with more
of the orangy golden color in the middle. If it were bigger, I
might send it off to a gem lab and have it identified, but at .65
carats, I doubt it's worth the investment. Also, the hardness
during cutting seemed reasonably high...somwhere around a 7 on the mohs
scale most likely.
