Sapphire is the September birthstone and comes in many colors, some having a color change in different lighting. Ruby, red sapphire, is the July birthstone. Because sapphire, or corundum, is the second hardest natural gemstone, it is very durable and also is hightly refractive, exhibiting beautiful play of colors if cut and polished properly.
